A good year

It’s got to be my favourite day  – January 1st  – though now it’s spreading to the Eve too because of the anticipation and the ritual I weave into those final hours of the departing year.

Last Dec 31 my sister was with me. We took pleasure in choosing a WORD to scribble on a slip of paper, rolling it into a tight ball and blowing on it three times before hurling it into the open fire.  It was to be left behind with 2013.  I couldn’t contain myself to one so choose a few.  As I was a first timer I unburdened myself of words like Limitations, Fear and Doubt. This year Clutter is going to be in my selection. There’s still a place for Fear.

And then my word (also written down and sent up the chimney with positive intentions) to carry me through the New Year.  I went with Abundance. Abundance in its full interpretation (plentiful, overflowing fullness…)

A few days in to January I went to my set of Angel cards (a gift from another sister) and pulled one for my year.  Serena, the Angel of Abundance fell from my deck. I kid you not! Coincidence or the start of my good fortune.

So tonight  you’ll find me by my fireside. Pen poised. Papers ready.

2014 has been a year with an abundance of ideas and inspirations. Lots of moments. These are some of my notables:

Bringing our Story Island writing classes to children and learning lots from that process

Developing Time Catchers  – still in its infancy.  Proud mama!

All I’ve gained from the workshops/classes I’ve attended : on Counselling, Journaling, Dreams, Metaphors, Therapeutic writing and the books I’ve read

Clocked a year as a library reading group facilitator on Memoirs

Finding my writing haven (an unwritten post) in a convent

Facing my regrets as I attended my school reunion and made peace with unfulfilled hopes and woke up to what I have/am

August in Ireland: wonderful days in stone cottage in Donegal with dearest school pal setting our worlds to right by a turf fire.  Seeing our kids choose mud-pie making over MINECRAFT.

A week in the Burren with my parents and other family- miserable weather but fun outings and golden time

In December a hop across on Eurostar for a day/night with a wonderful friend in Brussels

And to show I’m still a little shallow – receiving a fragrance combining set for Christmas

All the moments of learning I’ve had throughout the year ..some I ‘ve needed time and distance to appreciate

I didn’t achieve everything I’d set out to but I can carry them over in to 2015 and add them to my brand new sparkling list.

My 7 year-old asks me if Santa will have activated his Christmas list. He’s getting too much stick as a Chelsea supporter and wants to support Man U instead. Can he make an amendment? I tell him Santa can still be flexible. The elves haven’t started on his order yet.

I’m reminded of an order I placed a fortnight ago. As I drove past our local racecourse I noted that  a “Mind Body Soul exhibition” was happening that weekend.  My sister would be visiting from Ireland. We’d pop along. She’s also interested in the esoteric. We caught the tail end. Stall holders were starting to pack up and there was only one workshop still to play. “Cosmic Ordering Made Easy”.  So we sat in on it – an hour with an author of a book of the same title, There and then I placed an order. Later today I’ll find out if I was heard. Perhaps my boy has something to teach me.  That he can write a list and believe it will be actioned. Can it be that simple.
